Singapore Inter-Secondary School Astronomy Competition

Some of the best talents in astronomy in Singapore took part in the annual inter-secondary school astronomy competition held by National Junior College on 26 Jul 03. It was a hotly-contested final that saw the gifted boys from Raffles Institution emerged as the victors. The boys from Bukit Panjang Government High School performed creditably to take the runners-up spot while another promising team from Bukit Panjang Government High School, this time an all-girls team, was third.

The questions fielded to the participating teams were of a very high standard and it was both surprising and pleasant to discover that students were able to grasp complicated theories that belied their young age! Well done all participants!

Even though astronomical education in Singapore is still in its infancy as compared to nations like Japan and USA, we can see that astronomy is well and alive in local schools judging from the overt enthiusiasm exhibited by these promising young minds of Singapore! McGill hopes that local authorities and schools will start to regard astronomy as an important and interesting curriculum in the developement of critical and open thinking. As regular sponsors of astronomy-related events in Singapore, McGill will be glad to offer our services to schools in Singapore through the setting up of astronomy clubs, sales of scientific books and educational kits.
